An important announcement

I read this post at Boo's Baby Talk. It gives many links to different posts on various blogs but here is the gist - SG took a picture off YaadaYaada's blog and took credit for it. He apologized later saying that he was not aware that the image did not belong to him and removed the post (though some of the links on Boo's post were still going through, perhaps due to a web cache and I was able to read the post by SG in question and see for myself what had transpired.)

Ordinarily I would have left this to YaadaYaada to sort out and lent support only as a matter of principal but since SG is one of the participants and winners of the By The Water Cooler contest, I am taking a stand. I firmly believe that once you have a blog or a website, you are responsible for all the content that goes in it. At no point can you absolve yourself of that responsibility. Since this particular incident has brought to light the possibility that SG may or may not know where all the content on his blog is coming from, I am going to reverse the decision of declaring him a winner in the contest.

The winner in his place will be declared shortly. The esteemed M has been asked to go back to the drawing-board.

I'm confused what does a Golu blog have to do with winning the "By The Water Cooler contest?"
SG won your contest as you declared and now you have decided to reverse your decision based on another blog?
How are they related?
Doesn't seem to make sense or have any correlation?

Now if SG stole the story he submitted - then it makes sense.
But it was just a pic on a completely different topic...right?

If I read his comments correctly, he mentioned that he took a pic from his wife's collection and then posted it. Then when questioned about it he seemed to be upfront about the whole thing.
Didn't deny it or lie about it.
Yet, you are going to flip on one of the winner?

Bad precedence to set...because now other people will be combing the other 4 winners previous blogs to see if they can find a chink in the armor.

Just my humble opinion.

I dont get it. What does a golu post have to do with the contest?

Did SG steal the story he submitted for the contest? Why tag this to something thats totally unrelated?

He even seems to have apologized. He did not cover it up. This decision doesnt seem to make sense.

Hi Parul,

I read the post by YaadaYaada where she mentions about how SG used her Golu picture. so far as my understanding goes, if someone uses your original work, you should first ask that person to either remove the image or give proper credit. But this thing was directly blogged about. I understand it hurts when somebody uses our work, but two people blogging about the same thing, and you reversing your decision because SG used that image is in a way not fair to your contest rules. Did you mention there that using others' image will disqualify you from the contest? In my opinion, it is unfair to do so after declaring him the winner in altogether a different matter!

Again, it is your contest, your rules and regulations, your book as prize and your decision, but I believe as a contest judge, you should be neutral about contestants. I am sure SG mentioned an incident that happened with him as a contest entry. or did you google it and find out that it was copied too? then you may revoke your decision!

Booyah! said...

Your 'decision' seems to be sorely lacking any common sense. Unless his story was plagarized there seems to be no reason to demote him as one of the winners.

Is this some self-righteous way of 'teaching him a lesson?' Who appointed you moral arbiter, in the first place? Sure, if it was related to your book/contest, I could understand but this golu thingie has nothing to do with you, your blog, book or contest.

Oh come on guys. Its Parul's blog, Parul's contest.
So she is the one making rules. Its completely upto her to decide what to do what not to do.
Why are you playing SG's advocate. He did a mistake. Obviously with all the proof he will accept na. What choice did he have.

I completely support Parul.

Maddy.

What has this got to do with something he did in another post? I think you are being too judgmental. Anyway, it is just another lil book of yours...I don't think he will miss it.

The Cagey Bee said...

To: Anonymous Maddy

I guess we can ask you the same question, why are you the advocate against SG?
You also didn't deny that the current issue at hand (some golu pic) has nothing to do with Parul, Parul's blog, the contest, the book, or the rules as stated originally.

I also firmly support Parul - I firmly support the ORIGINAL decision that was made.

Look, the name is Parul - not Parule Changer.

I'm confident that Parul will stand by her initial decision after some more careful thought.
Her initial decision was the best decision as we all know.
Congrats to the Original 5 winners.

CageyBee. You look like SG himself or his wife:)
Coming back to reply to comments.

You stated your opinion, I stated my opinion. Why are you imposing your opinion on mine. Lets move on. As I said before its her blog and her contest and entirely upto her to do what she wants. If she felt what SG did wrong then it up to her to decide what to do. Not me or you.
Anyways its not some Golu pic. Its somones personal pic from someones home:)

To Anonymous Maddy

You said I look like SG or SG's wife.
~ That's the best you can come up with just because I think the 5 winners should remain the same?

And then you said it's because that I come back to reply to comments.
~ Well you also came back to reply to comments. So are you really SG? Maybe his split personality?

If you've read SG's blogs (and I'm sure you have) then you know that I am definitely not him because I have commented on his blog under the name 'The Cagey Bee'.
Not 'Cagey Bee' as you erroneously stated above.

You also said that I am imposing my will on yours.
~ Am I doing that? I am just stating that you have acknowledged NONE of the points that others have made here and you want a twisted version of an 'ex post facto' ruling on this contest.

You also said the following: "Anyways its not some Golu pic. Its somones personal pic from someones home"
~ Thanks for giving away your cards. Sounds like your opinion is personal and highly subjective...rather than being objective. Is it your golu pic? Is it your friend's or relative's pic?

As many have already asked - what does a golu pic have to do with this contest?
I know you won't answer, so I'll answer for you.
It has nothing to do with this contest, blog, etc.

Or perhaps you finished 6th in the contest and by bumping SG you will no longer be first alternate...and you can also join the 5 winners.

Do be MAD Maddy. Like I said earlier, I trust that Parul will make the wise decision and stand by her original decision and original winners...that were objectively selected.

Dear Parul,

I would be glad if you re-think your decision of considering SG's winning entry...

SG made an honesy mistake and he has asked his sincere apologies to concerned.

It doesn't make much sense in you changing your decision for the same.

Since everyone's fighting and arguing, I think you should just declare me the new winner and give and my senior citizen's story the prize.
Will solve 3 things.
1.M wouldnt have to go to the trouble of picking a new winner.
2.People can stop arguing about whats right and wrong.
3.I have 4 kids. (I like to randomly throw that out to make people feel for me)

I think it's funny how you assume that depriving him of an "autographed copy of your book" is some form of appropriate punishment for what seems to be an honest mistake.

Makes you sound judgemental and frankly, really arrogant.

CageyBee, Now I get it. CONFIRMED You are SG.
No wonder you are so upset on not getting the prize.
Seriously instead of wasting your time here why dont you go to peoples blog and steal some more pics and pass them as your own.

Read the post by yaada yaada.. my only issue with SG is that he actually accepted the compliments on the golu... that is dishonest... Mixups have a way of happening.
But if u're putting up a picture u aught to know where u got it from...

Copyright issues are a tad hazy always, moreso on blogs which are supposed to be as personal but are really not so. One tends to get casual and not give due credit.. me included. That's a bad idea.

If it was a genuine mixup.. I feel for SG.

parul - i admire people who can stand up for what they believe in and actually do something about it. i admire the stand you took, (and having read some of the comments and excerpts of what transpired, at yy's blog, i do believe SG was not all innocent.

for example, in the comment snapshot on yy's blog, he says to two people - thanks for the golu compliments. but in yy's cooments (comment no.11), he apologises and says he put up the picture, but never claimed that it was his (saying thank you for the golu compliments means that he is saying they are his, no?). then immediately in comment no.12 he says he checked with his wife, he had taken a pic from his wife's collection, and hence thought that they were his (but just in the previous comment he said he never claimed they were his, no?). inconsistent.

if you think i did all this analysis because i am highly unemployed, then you are absolutely right :-)

though i don't think he originally intended to steal the picture, he obviously got carried away and did'nt come clean when he should have. also i think 'i did'nt know' is no longer an acceptable excuse for all one's wrongdoings. one has a responsibility to 'know'.

anyway i appreciate the stand you take.

ps - sraikh, i second your suggestion. you have 4 kids??? you have my vote for winning all future contests whether you participate or not!

Oh brother. Who are trying to fool with the nonsense that you're posting?
Ok, it's time for me to carve up your ludicrous comments once again like Jack the Ripper.

Where shall we start?
I know...how about your classic 'deflection' tactics.

I said - You gave away your cards about the golu pic being of significance to you personally.
Then you said back to me - Confirmed, that I really am SG.

I said - Don't be mad Maddy.
Then you said back to me - no wonder I am so upset.

Do you have any originality? Or do you just copy/paste and re-word my verbiage back at me?

Here is the bottom line - I have told you that I am not SG. Look at my writing style.
It's like no other that you will ever see.
I'm a well worded, fast talking, smooth operator, who always backs things up with facts and objectivity.
You can bring your fiction, subjectivity, and blurry vision of the truth...but that's like wielding a knife at a gunfight.

Now my turn - I have said that I am not SG and can prove it because people know that I have posted on his blog.
But you have NOT denied that some dumb golu pic is either yours or belongs to someone you know.
You have also NOT said how some irrelevant golu pic relates to this contest, blog, or Parul.
In fact, NO ONE has said anything on how it relates.

Do you want to know why NO ONE has said how it relates to the contest, blog, or Parul?

Because it doesn't relate and everyone knows that. So everyone will just ignore this statement every time they comment.

You're the only one that is getting upset and you're the one that is making this personal and subjective. Not me...not at all.

I am nowhere near upset. Do you know why? It's because I don't really have a dog in this race to get upset.

My only point is that I believe Parul's original decision was JUST and it should stand.
Some insignificant golu pic should have no barring on the "By The Water Cooler Contest".
However, you (and only you from all of the comments listed above)...have it out for one of the contest winners.

(wait I just checked, there may be another - and once again that person didn't say how some stupid golu pic relates to the contest, blog, etc)

Once again...no one will say how it relates. People will just ignore this point all day long.
I trust in Parul to stick with her original guns - it's clearly the logical and objective decision.

Ok MAD, I'm done. So now it's your turn to respond with your 6th place subjective viewpoints.
This time can you please try to make a better attempt at formulating a thought?

Wow!! (@Cagey Bee) I never thought anyone could miss why Parul reversed the decision to declare SG a winner. From what I see, SG claimed he didn't know that the image did not belong to him. Which means it isn't clear whether he is the owner of the image or not. Going by the explanation, it isn't clear whether the By the Water Cooler post was his original submission either. I mean, if he lifted content once, he could do it again, no? What if it comes to light later that he copied that post from someone else too?

The Cagey Bee said...

@ Anonymous Maddy

Yes, I did say those words about the golu pic.
Did I stutter? Is that why you needed to re-confirm?

Why should I have sensitivity toward some random pic that has nothing to do with this contest?
When there is a contest about golu pics then I won't call it irrelevant and insignificant.

Does it really show what kind of person I am?
Well, in a way it does. It shows that I don't give a hoot about your golu pic...which for all I know could have been photoshopped.

Does it say that I'm shallow?
Hell no. Your handle on the English vocabulary is in dire need of improvement.
An example of shallow would be if I ever said that I don't like a girl solely based on her lack of beauty.
That would make me shallow - which I am not.

However, it is true that your golu pic is about as important to me as the price of tea in mainland China.
Good job on using "deflection" again by not answering or acknowledging anything I said earlier.
I guess me insulting your "precious" golu pic has proved your point. What was your point again?
Oh yeah...you don't have a point that uses logic and objectivity.

Batter out, try again.

WOW! Just when I thought Maddy was at the bottom of the food chain - in comes the leader of the TARDS.
I don't even know where to begin about your highly warped comment that is based heavily on "guesswork linking."

How about the simple fact of innocent until proven guilty?
SG takes a wack golu pic from his wife on an unrelated blog and because of that you can link that he lifted the water cooler story?
Give me a break! That is one hell of a stretch. HUGE!

You just crammed in a bunch of "if" questions at the end of your comment which make you look very, very weak.
So I will come down to your level and throw some "if" statements around too.

If a person drives slightly above the speed limit, will he/she also commit murder?
Both acts are breaking the law.

If the USA can drop a nuclear bomb on Japan twice, then will the USA do it again?
Japan better be on high alert.

Now when you prove that SG lifted the Water Cooler story...then you have a point.
Until then, some overrated golu pic should have no correlation to this contest.
Give the man (SG) a fair shake.

Now let's actually quote the most laughable statements (your final two lines) -
"if he lifted content once, he could do it again"
"What if it comes to light later that he copied that post from someone else too?"

bwahahahahaha!!
Is this for real? How old are you? Are you an educated person?

Those statements are so general that it can be applied to anyone, at anytime, for anything.
What if it comes to light that the other 4 winners also lifted their story?
What if a new winner is declared and that story is also lifted?
What if YOU just lifted the comments that you posted above?
If you ever lifted anything in your life...well then you are capable of lifting Fort Knox.

What if? What if? What if? If... If... If...

From what I can see, nothing was proven or said about the story...except that it was a winner declared by Parul.
I agree with Parul that it should be a winner and remain as such (and the other 4 too).
I liked what all of the winners had to say and they are all deserving...so leave it as is.
And from the looks of things - many here agree with me.

And for the people who are against the right thing to do - they can NOT put two logical statements together.

I do appreciate you using English words but when you re-arrange them in a random order at attempting to formulate a thought...I think you lost everyone.
Especially with your last sentence (fragment).

Did you go to school much?
There is a difference between fragments and sentences.
So approach me when you have crossed the 5th grade in grammar skills.
That way I can better respond to your lunacy.

I was able to decipher that I need to grow up from juvenile thinking.
Again, deflection on your part.

Add to that, where was I juvenile?
Again, no examples from you.

Oh by the way, you don't need to state your name - I can tell it's you by your TARD writing style which is backed up by nothing, has no basis, and is HIGHLY subjective.

Again, what does the sucky golu pic have to do with the contest?
Thanks again for not answering that question - you know you will never answer it.

Give me more deflection.
Give me more of my own words re-arranged back at me in a sloppy way.
Give me more subjectivity.
Give me all of those things repeatedly that makes you look weaker and weaker by the minute.

You're good at that.

I, unfortunately, do not have the maturity to come down to your level and speak the language that you speak so I will leave this discussion right here. Moreover, I do not want to turn Parul's blog into a free for all.

I do not engage in mudslinging with people who obviously get worked up at the first sign of disagreement. What is it they say about never arguing with idiots? They just drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience, it seems.

I said what does some crappy golu pic have to do with the contest and you said -
"That SG guy won the contest and then Parul came to know that he was trying to pass on someone else's pic as his own."

Ok, that tells me that the boring golu pic still has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with this contest.
I'm using your own lackluster words.

The facts are that SG submitted a story and won the contest as stated in the rules.
Did the rules state something about a wack golu pic?
If so, please point that out to me.

One last thing - I read Yadda Yadda's blog from where this whole drama started.
After SG apologized about the confusion - Yadda Yadda said, "SG, no problem!"

Why hasn't anyone mentioned that?

If Yadda Yadda has no problem - what is YOUR problem?
What is YOUR problem with SG when Yadda Yadda is cool about it?

I'm sure Parul has seen Yadda Yadda's comments and understands no harm done and will stand by her original judgment - which was best.

I trust in Parul.

I am not going to answer to everyone separately but I have read all the comments and am going to explain my decision once and for all. Please don't mistake this for a justification because it is not.

As a writer I know how difficult it is to generate original content. I have also been at the receiving end of people lifting my content as their own and know how terrible that feels. Therefore, I have a zero tolerance policy for people who display that kind of behaviour. I believe it was not an honest mistake and so the apology when it did come in the face of indisputable proof did not qualify him as honest and upfront.

Declaring someone a winner on my contest is an endorsement of that person. I refuse to endorse anyone who has lifted content even once.

I will not be saying more on the topic. If you still want to argue this out, please try and remain civil to each other. All trollish comments will be deleted with the utmost alacrity.

Many thanks to everyone for their involvement and contribution on the subject.

Gettingtherenow. I bow to you.

Cageybee, I dont want to get down to your low level and mudslinging.Carry on your nonsense arguments. But you definitely need help.

Parul has given her decision.Bravo Parul you have made a fair decision and this is how it should be. Not bowing to pressures and going against your ethics.

This is a good example and a future reference for people to be discouraged from lifting content from somewhere else.

@ Parul

Thanks for stating your decision.

I will not say anything more about this topic on your blog, so you need not worry about monitoring and/or deleting my comments.
I noticed you took my last comment out - and that's cool.

Thanks everyone for the spirited discussion.

Damn, Sraikh said what I was planning to! I may not have four kids but I could do with all the lou I can get. I have Niyogys in the house, yo.

That said, I completely understand your decision, Parul. The way SG chose to 'aplogise' really put his veracity in question in my book.

Parul, not to laugh at your trolls or anything, but The Cagey Bee is making my slow Monday afternoon a lot more fun. Just thought you'd like to know. :D

Wow! A lot has been said. I had a good time going through the comments.

I don't think I take any stand here. The decision should be entirely yours. But I do have a question for you Parul. Since you claim to have a zero tolerance policy towards people who lift content off other people's blogs, have you considered finding a way in which you can examine all the content posted by the bloggers who were declared as winners? In my opinion, only that would be fair!

Oops.. My comment sounds rather rude to me now when I read it myself. I am sorry! I hope you know that was not my intent.. I was just expressing an opinion :)

Hi Parul,

Your blog has been one of my favorite haunts all this while but I am sorry to say that this entire episode has just left me disappointed.
I think you are being unnecessarily holier-than-thou on this issue. Agreed that what SG did was wrong but as long as you cannot establish that the other winners have never done anything of the same nature, you can't just take the prize away. If SG hasn't broken any rules specified by you at the outset of your contest, then he won fair and square and what you are doing is just plain WRONG!
And to all who've been ranting about Parul's blog and Parul's rules and Parul's ethics - agreed that it's her blog, her rules... but 1)She is the one changing the rules and 2) There is no such thing as somebody's ethics - those are common to us all. What SG did was unethical, sure. But what Parul is doing is unethical too. And we all know what they say about 2 wrongs.

Anonymous said...

yes, unethical Parul! Please go through the blogs of the other winners and make sure they did not "steal" too.

Not going to visit your blog anymore , you are unfair , or buy your book. Infact ...

Unless, you can determine with complete veracity, that none of your other "winners" have "ever lifted content," (does copying in school exams fall under 'lifting content' as well?), I still don't understand this decision of yours.
This golu picture had absolutely NOTHING to do with your rules, book, or contest.

What happens if, later on, you find that one of your other winners had posted song lyrics on their blog without crediting the original artiste? Are you going to demand your precious autographed book back? And have them pay shipping? Gosh, you certainly have an holier-than-thou attitude!
